Entry deadline is November 1, 2023.
For the Junior Heifer and Junior Market Animal show, a Top Five will be selected from the Breed Champions. The Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion will be selected and then an additional 3 animals will be selected by the Judges from the remaining Breed Champions and Reserves. Once a Breed Champion is selected for any position in the Top Five, that respective Reserve Breed Champion will be allowed to enter the ring for contention for any remaining spots in the Top Five. The Top Five Heifers and Market Animals will receive banners.
All Breed Champions (steers/market heifers and heifers) at the 2023 Hoosier Beef Congress will be eligible for additional $50.00 prize money if they are named a breed champion of the 4-H Show at the 2024 Indiana State Fair. The Grand Champion Market Animal and the Supreme Heifer at the 2023 HBC will be eligible for additional $100.00 prize money if selected the Grand Champion Market Animal or Supreme Heifer at the 2024 Indiana State Fair. To qualify for the Hall of Fame Award, the same animal must be exhibited by the same exhibitor in the same breed division at both events. These awards will be presented at the 2024 IJBCA Awards Banquet.
ANGUS
Steers and Heifers: To be eligible to show in the Angus
divisions, all exhibitors must be paid members of the Indiana Junior Angus
Association. Dues for the 2023 year (December 1, 2023 through November
30, 2024) must be paid prior to check in of Angus registration papers and /
or Angus cattle at the 2023 HBC Show. Must have original registration
papers or will also accept electronic registration papers and a matching
legible tattoo to be eligible to show in the Angus divisions. Champion
and Reserve Champion are subject to blood typing and/or DNA testing.
NO FAXES OR PHOTOCOPIES ACCEPTED.
BELTED GALLOWAY
Exhibitors must obey all rules of the Belted Galloway Society and of the
Hoosier Beef Congress. All Belted Galloway exhibitors must be a member
in good standing of the Great Lakes Belted Galloway Association, or a member
in good standing of the Belted Galloway Youth Group. Applications and
membership will be verified or collected prior to check-in.
Steers: Belted Galloway steers must be registered or
recorded in the Belted Galloway Society Herd Book.
Heifers: To be shown at the Hoosier Beef Congress must have a Purebred Registration Certificate issued by the Belted Galloway Society.
BLACK HEREFORD
Any junior exhibiting an American Black Hereford registered steer or heifer
must be a member of the Indiana Junior Black Hereford Association.
Dues will be collected prior to check in. The Indiana Black Hereford
Association will accept digital beef printed photocopies of registration
papers.
Steers: Steers must have registration papers issued from
the American Black Hereford Association (62.5% or higher) and must have
legible tattoos matching the papers..
Heifers: Heifers must have registration papers issued from
the American Black Hereford Association (62.5% or higher) and must have
legible tattoos matching the papers.
CHAROLAIS
Steers: Must be sired by a registered Charolais bull and/or
the dam must be a registered Charolais female. Steers must be at least 50%
or more Charolais and have a registration certificate issued by the American
Charolais Association. Steer must show a predominance of Charolais
characteristics. Black steers will not be accepted. “Smoky”
colored steers are acceptable. All Charolais steer exhibitors must be a
member of the Indiana Junior Charolais Association. Dues will be collected
prior to check in. The Indiana Charolais will accept fax and photo copies of
registration papers.
Heifers: Purebred registration papers are required. All
Charolais heifer exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Charolais
Association. Dues will be collected prior to check in.
CHAROLAIS COMPOSITE
Heifers: All Charolais Composite heifers must be 50% or
more Charolais with a registration paper from the AICA and
MUST have a matching legible tattoo to be eligible to
show. MUST by sired by an AICA registered purebred
bull or AICA registered purebred dam. Black or black baldie heifers
will not be accepted. Indiana Charolais representatives reserve the
right to make final sifting determinations. All Charolais composite
heifer exhibitors must be a member of the Indiana Junior Charolais
Association, dues will be collected prior to check in.
CHIANINA
Heifers: To be eligible to show in the HBC Chianina Heifer
classes, the exhibitor must be a member of the Indiana Chianina Junior
Assoc. The annual membership may be paid at the HBC. All
Chianina heifers must have original registration papers with the denotation
of “CHIANINA, CHI-INFLUENCE, CHIFORD or ITALIAN FULLBLOOD” and
legible tattoos which include both HERD PREFIX and NUMBER YEAR LETTER tattoo
that matches the registration papers. NO FAXES OR COPIES ACCEPTED.
Steers: To be eligible to show in the HBC Chianina Heifer and Steer classes, the exhibitor must be a member of the Indiana Chianina Junior Association. The annual membership may be paid at the HBC. All Chianina heifers and steers must have original registration papers and legible tattoos which include both HERD PREFIX AND NUMBER YEAR LETTER tattoo that matches the registration paper. NO FAXES OR COPIES ACCEPTED.
CHIANGUS / RED CHIANGUS
Heifers: To be eligible to show in the HBC Chiangus Heifer
classes, the exhibitor must be a member of the Indiana Chianina Junior
Assoc. The annual membership may be paid at the HBC. All
Chiangus heifers must have original registration papers with the denotation
of “CHIANGUS or RED CHIANGUS” and have legible tattoos which
include both HERD PREFIX and NUMBER YEAR LETTER tattoo that matches the
registration papers. NO FAXES OR COPIES ACCEPTED.
GELBVIEH
Steers: Must have American Gelbvieh Association (AGA)
affidavit signed by the breeder or registration paper. Must be 50% or
greater with at least one or both parents registered Gelbvieh. Exhibitor or
family must be a member of the Indiana Gelbvieh Association. NO FAXES OR
COPIES ACCEPTED.
Heifers: Must have 75% Gelbvieh or Balancer original
American Gelbvieh Association (AGA) registration certificate. Exhibitor or
family must be a member of the Indiana Gelbvieh Association. NO FAXES OR
COPIES ACCEPTED.
HEREFORD
Any junior exhibiting a Hereford steer or heifer must be a member of the
Indiana Junior Hereford Association. Dues will be collected prior to
check-in. The Indiana Hereford Association will accept fax or photocopies of
registration papers, or bill of sale with a copy of the registration papers.
Champion and Reserve Champion may be subject to blood typing and/or DNA
testing.
Steers: Steers must have registration papers issued from
the American Hereford Association and must have legible tattoos matching the
papers. No Steer Certificates will be accepted. The proper papers must
have both the sire and dam’s registration number listed. Steers out of
“commercial Hereford cows” will NOT be accepted.
Heifers: Must be registered with a legible tattoo. Polled
and Horned Herefords will be combined.
LIMOUSIN
Steers: . Open to Steers of 12.5% Limousin genetics or
higher (NALF orange or purple registration paper).
Heifers: Open to: 1) Purebred Limousin
Heifers of 75% or higher Limousin genetics (as calculated by NALF) with
a NALF orange registration paper. 2) Lim-flex heifers of 25%
or higher Limousin genetics (as calculated by NALF) with a NALF purple
registration paper. The sire or dam from which the Limousin genetics
comes from must have DNA on file with the NALF Association.
At the sole discretion of the Indiana Limousin Breed Manager, Heifers and Steers are subject to DNA testing to verify parentage. Each animal entered MUST have an original orange or purple North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) registration certificate. NO FAXES OR PHOTOCOPIES ACCEPTED. Each exhibitor or family must be a member of the Indiana Limousin Association. Membership entry will be accepted at the Hoosier Beef Congress prior to check in.
MAINE-ANJOU
National rules and Indiana State Fair rules will apply to ownership of all
animals, either steers or heifers. If unsure, call for verification. Junior
rules apply. Juniors showing ownership should be those showing the
livestock. All Maine-Anjou exhibitors must be current, paid members of the
Indiana Junior Maine-Anjou Association prior to entering the show arena. No
exceptions. Dues will be collected prior to check in. NO COPIES OF
REGISTRATION PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Steers: All Maine-Anjou steers must have American
Maine-Anjou Association (AMAA) registration papers in the exhibitors name
with matching legible tattoo. Calf must be a percentage ¼ and up.
Heifers: Heifers must be ¾ or above with papers from
the AMAA and in the exhibitors name. Must be sired by a registered
Maine-Anjou bull. Legible tattoos are required.
MAINTAINER
National rules and Indiana State Fair rules will apply to ownership of all
animals, either steers or heifers. If unsure, call for verification. Junior
rules apply. Juniors showing ownership should be those showing the
livestock. All Maine-Anjou exhibitors must be current, paid members of the
Indiana Junior Maine-Anjou Association prior to entering the show arena. No
exceptions. Dues will be collected prior to check in. NO COPIES OF
REGISTRATION PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
Heifers only: Heifers must be 1/4 to 5/8 with papers from
the AMAA and in the exhibitors name. Legible tattoos are required.
MINIATURE HEREFORD
Any junior exhibiting a Miniature Hereford steer or heifer must be a member
(family or junior) of the Miniature Hereford Breeders Association
(MHBA). An annual junior membership will be available at check in.
Original or electronic AHA registration papers will be accepted; pending or
applied for papers will not be eligible to show. All persons making
entries in the show agree to abide by all rules and regulations of the
Miniature Hereford Breeders Association..
Steers: Steers must have registration papers issued from
the American Hereford Association with matching legible tattoo. All
steers may be no greater than 48” at the hip.
Heifers: Heifers must have registration papers from the
American Hereford Association with matching legible tattoo. All
heifers may be no greater than 45” at the hip. Polled and horned
Miniature Herefords will be combined.
RED ANGUS
All animals entered must conform to all show and Red Angus Association of
America eligibility requirements. Cattle entered in the HBC must be
officially registered in the Red Angus Association Herdbook. All
animals must be properly tattooed and will be inspected at the show.
Tattoos must be legible and must match the animal ID and Herd Prefix on the
registration certificate. Anyone exhibiting in the Red Angus show must
be a member of the Indiana Red Angus Association. Exhibitors must obey
all rules and regulations of the Red Angus Association of America and of the
Hoosier Beef Congress.
Steers: Steers must be 50% or greater Red Angus from one registered parent. Steer must be 85% red in color, polled and display sufficient breed characteristics which match percent of registration. Cattle entered in the HBC must be officially registered in the Red Angus Association Herdbook.
Heifers: Only registered Red Angus cattle in Category 1A (100%) and Category 1B (87% through 99%) will be eligible to show. This specifically excludes cattle in Category II and Category III. Category 1A and 1B will show together in the same classes.
RED POLL
Steers: Have to be full blood animals, but don’t have
to be registered in the national office. The Indiana Red Poll Association
has a form that can be used. The state Red Poll Association and breed
manager will do the checking and screening of animals at the HBC.
Heifers: Must be purebred heifers (15/16 or greater) Red Poll blood and must be registered with the American Red Poll Association.
SALERS
The Indiana Salers Association has adopted the same rules as the American
Salers Association and will allow 50% to show in both the steer and heifer
show. Registration papers from the American Salers Association are required.
Faxes and photocopies will be accepted.
SHORTHORN
Steers and Heifers: Must be at least 15/16 % and show
Shorthorn characteristics to be eligible to show as Shorthorn and must have
the red purebred registration papers. NO FAXES OR PHOTOCOPIES ACCEPTED. Each
calf must have a legible ear tattoo that matches its registration
paper. Anyone exhibiting in the Shorthorn Show must be a current
member of the Indiana Junior Shorthorn Association. Membership dues are
payable at the Hoosier Beef Congress.
SHORTHORN PLUS
Steers: Shorthorn Plus Cattle eligible to show in
this division are steers that are registered with the American Shorthorn
Association as Shorthorn Plus Cattle and have the Green Registration
Papers. NO FAXES OR PHOTOCOPIES ACCEPTED. These steers will have
a percentage of Shorthorn blood concentration between 1/4 and 7/8 and will
be eligible to compete in one division only. No animal registered at
less than 1/4 blood will be eligible to be entered. Anyone exhibiting in the
Shorthorn Plus Steer show must be a current member of the Indiana Junior
Shorthorn Association. Membership dues are payable at the Hoosier Beef
Congress.
Heifers: Shorthorn Plus Cattle eligible to show in this division are heifers of 50% or higher blood concentration, registered with the American Shorthorn Association as Shorthorn Plus Cattle and have the Green Registration Papers. NO FAXES OR PHOTOCOPIES ACCEPTED. These heifers must have a legible tattoo which matches the green registration (halfblood or above) papers. Anyone exhibiting in the Shorthorn Plus Heifer show must be a current member of the Indiana Junior Shorthorn Association. Membership dues are payable at the Hoosier Beef Congress.
SIMMENTAL
All Simmental exhibitors must be an Indiana Junior Simmental member. Dues
can be paid at the HBC prior to check in. The dues will run from HBC to HBC.
The Indiana Simmental Association will accept photocopies and faxes of
registration papers.
Steers: To be shown at the Indiana State Fair and the
Hoosier Beef Congress, steers must be at least 50% or more Simmental and
have a registration certificate issued by the American Simmental
Association.
Heifers: Must be at least 76% Simmental Blood and also must
have a registration certificate issued by the American Simmental
Association.
SIM-SOLUTION
All Simmental exhibitors must be an Indiana Junior Simmental member. Dues
can be paid at the HBC prior to check in. The dues will run from HBC to HBC.
The Indiana Simmental Association will accept photocopies and faxes of
registration papers.
Heifers only: Must be at least 50% and up to and including
75% Simmental blood to show in the Sim-Solution Division and also must have
a registration certificate issued by the American Simmental
Association.
MARKET HEIFER
Market Heifers will show by weight with all breeds and crossbreds showing
together. The Champion Market Heifer will compete against the breed
champion steers for Grand Champion Market Animal.
DIVISIONS
Divisions will be allowed in the heifer show based on the following
guidelines. Division guidelines can be adjusted by the Junior Show
Manager as needed. Awards are the responsibility of the Breed
Association.
Less than 20 head = 1 Division 21-40 head = up to 2 Divisions
41-60 head = up to 3 Divisions 61-80 head = up to 4 Divisions
81-100 head = up to 5 Divisions over 100 head = up to 6 Divisions
Contributions are based on the previous year’s numbers.
175 head or more = $700 75-174 head = $500
25-74 head = $300 Less than 25 head = $175
